A Note About "Clueless Peds"

In order to keep the peace on the trail and to keep up our good reputation as cyclists:Peds (and horses) always have right-of-way over bikes.

  • Although they can be annoying, be kind. Don't yell "clueless ped!" We are all out to enjoy our recreation experience, and they may not realize they are being clueless. You and I can inadvertently become a clueless ped when walking on a trail, distracted in conversation or thought.
  • To pass, slow down to a safe speed and courteously ring your bell or exclaim "Passing, left," and after they move over, say "Thank you" or "Thank you, two more" etc.
  • Some may not hear you due to earbuds or hearing loss, so pass courteously even if they don't get out of the way.
  • Don't lecture anyone. You wouldn't want to be lectured to on your day of fun. Hopefully after enough encounters, they will learn how to share the trail.

To connect from the south end of Carpinteria Ave turn left on Rincon Ave/Hwy 150 and ride 0.6 mile to Rincon Hill Road. Turn right and glide down (becomes Bates Road) to the trailhead at the park. VE4 RINCON Update BIG NEWS! The new "Rincon Bike Trail" opened in September 2014 on the ocean side of US 101 along the waterfront from Mobil Pier Road 3.6 miles to Rincon County Beach Park at Bates Road, south of Carpinteria. This can also be a nice easy scenic 7.2 round trip ride (part of 2nd Ed Ride VE4) on its own. When cycling north on Rincon Pkwy, the roadway eventually crosses under Hwy 101, and passes a freeway off ramp. In another 0.75 mile cross back under the freeway at the first opportunity to get to Mobil Pier Rd. Go to the right to access the new bike trail. Parking is also available at the northwest trailhead at Rincon County Beach Park. The trail has great ocean views. Knocks are proximity to the freeway and road noise, and if you're a slow casual cyclist expect speeding through-cyclists, especially on weekends. The trail has been mapped on Googlemaps (a detailed map is in the 2nd Ed).

To continue on to Carpinteria and Santa Barbara (Ride SB1 Opt 2) on a popular on-road bike route, turn right on Bates Road from Rincon Beach Park and ride up the grade (turns into Rincon Hill Rd) for about 0.8 mile (170 feet elevation gain) to Hwy 150 (Rincon Rd), and turn left to get to Carpinteria Avenue in 0.6 mile. In the future, Rincon Trail may be extended to Carpinteria Ave.
