News: SC3 Camp Pendleton bike access: Starting March 1, 2016 bicyclists are required to register in order to have access to the base. An online process is required, and access is good for one year. Bicyclists need to re-register every year. All bicyclists will need to be registered and show their U.S. or State identification when entering the base. Plan ahead as registration approval can take 7 days or more.  Click here for the registration form.

News: San Clemente has a new Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan. The only aspect of interest to us is a 1-mile Class I connector between the Class I path along Coast Hwy (DP1) and the Beach Trail (SC1) completed summer 2017 (incorporated into Ride DP1 in 2nd Ed).

SD1 MISSION BAY/BEACH LOOP/OLD TOWN OPTION x P242 on the map "Quivera" should be "Quivira" Extra Tips: P243 Parking/ride start tip: On busy beach days, which can be any beautiful weekend and most summer days, if all in the party are cycling, you may want to park and start in one of the less crowded areas, such as along Quivira Road, to avoid the traffic jams into Mission Beach and beach parking lot gridlock. P245 Option 2. The road around Fiesta Island is one-way in the counter-clockwise direction, so you have a choice of doing the entire 5 miles, or taking the cut-off to half that distance.

p258 Rent 'n Ride A new bike share program - Decobike - has stations throughout downtown and up through Balboa Park/Hillcrest. Update: P260 Par 1 (Mile 3.0): A new section of San Diego Maritime Museum is at the east end of Harbor Bridge along the trail, including a replica of the San Salvador tall ship. Par 2 (Mile 4.0). Regarding the stretch between Harbor Dr and Shelter Island Dr: The Ride describes cycling through marinas and the sidewalk along Scott St, then Carleton St and Shafter St. However, a brand new promenade was constructed between Shelter Island Dr (just west of the Shelter Island entrance sign) connecting to the other marinas, along the new Intrepid Landing development. So, unless "no bikes" signs are posted, you can avoid those streets altogether by making your way slowly and courteously on the promenades through the marinas where allowed. Or, use Scott Street (between Harbor Dr and Shelter Island Dr) which now has sharrows.

Also, just south of the Midway, on a detour down a sidewalk toward the bay, make sure to check out the statues of the returning WWII Vet kissing the nurse in NYC, and Bob Hope entertaining the troupes complete with audio.

There should no longer be generator noise. p269, top (mile 1.4) Glorietta Blvd now has improved crosswalks and excellent bike lanes. Option 2, bottom p271: South Bay Fish & Grill has closed. The casual and popular Galley Restaurant next door is open for all meals with evening entertainment. p272, 3rd paragraph of Option 2. Near the E St Trolley stop is Emma's Pancakes and Denny's. 4th par: Where it says "From here National City’s Pier 32 Marina (and continuation of the Bayshore Bikeway) is 0.4 mile to the left and the Plaza Bonita Center is 2.3 miles to the right (Option 2A)." 9. DESERT REGION

Bear Creek Trail, La Quinta LQ1

THE BIKE FRIENDLY CITIES OF THE DESERT Updates: p 322 The "1e11" Trail, the planned cross-valley regional trail, is now named "CV Link." It still has a long way to go, hampered by anti-trail opposition, especially from Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells. As a result cycling activists are boycotting businesses in both cities in a movement entitled "no bikes no bucks."  For the latest, check out the CV Link info page and the Friends of CV Link advocacy page.

Palm Springs, by far the most bike-aware city of the desert, continues to add separated bike lanes to many of its roadways. Check for the latest here.

PS1 PALM SPRINGS STAR TOUR X  P 326 MapKey#8 "457 Ann Miller" should be #8 "Ann Miller" and "Kirt" should be "Kurt" Russell.  Corrected/updated in 2nd Ed.   LINKS : Palm Springs Restaurants

CC1 COACHELLA VALLEY BIKEWAY Updates: p 339 "The Ride" A new crosswalk with blinking on-road lights across Cathedral Canyon Rd was constructed at the actual trail crossing, as opposed to up the road as described in the text. Still, be extra careful as it's not a regular stoplight. Also the city changed "Buddy Rogers Avenue" to "Officer Jermaine Gibson." That is the connection between Hwy 111 and the trail along the river next to the car dealerships. (All updated in 2nd Ed).

RM2 RIVER GRAND LOOP Updates: p 346 Whitewater Park is renamed Rancho Mirage Community Park and has a new amphitheater, but bikes are now not allowed to ride on its paved trails. You can still ride in on the access road and use the restrooms. p 346-7 Option 1 (Westfield Mall) is lower priority and was left off the map to avoid clutter. It simply follows the north sidewalk of Hwy 111 from Parkview to "feature 8" (the mall) then continues left up Monterey to rejoin the main ride at "feature 1", OR turn right on Monterey to join Option 2 ("feature 6" - El Paseo). p 347 par 2: After passing The River and Magnesia Falls, instead of taking the 111 sidewalk all the way to Parkview, you can detour down quiet residential streets to the left accessible only by bike/ped (Rancho, or Desert or Barbara to Rancho) and then at Joshua turn right to intersect with Parkview. Option 2, El Paseo: The fun themed Golf Cart Parade is held in late October down El Paseo. You can ride your bike on the closed road up to 30 minutes before parade time, a great way to see the art works in the median. p 348, 1st par of main ride continuation: If you would rather avoid the College of the Desert such as on busy days ("feature 1") you can turn left on the east sidewalk of Monterey, then curve right on the south sidewalk of Magnesia Falls to rejoin the trail at "feature 3.".

IW1 INDIAN WELLS Update: Indian wells removed bike route signs and un-designated IW1 as a bike path. However, their policy is still to not hassle well-behaved cyclists on sidewalks, which it is now considered. Indian Wells has also come out against the regional bike trail CV Link passing through their city. Public criticism against the city's anti-bike attitude is welcomed! LINK:  City Bikeways Map
